Wingspan: 3 cm. (males); 3.5 cm. (females).

Flight time: Single brooded, flying from mid June to late July.

Status: Rare breeding resident.

Distinguishing features: This dark skipper is quite similar to the Dun Skipper. However, both sexes have a white fringe of scales on the outer wing margin; have an orange-tan suffusion to the lower hindwing, and two prominent white spots on the lower forewing.

Distribution and habitat: Lindsey (1917, 1921, 1922) indicated this species was quite rare in the state, and little has changed in 8 decades. It is found in a very few widely scattered sites across the state, being mainly restricted to fens, low prairies, and wet meadows.

Natural History: The only reported host plant for this species (Carex trichocarpa) is quite uncommon in the state, and is not present at any of the known sites. Its larvae likely feed on some other sedge, perhaps Carex stricta or Carex lanuginosa. Hibernation occurs when the larvae are half grown.
