Wing span: 4.2-4.8 cm.

Flight time: Strays from the south arrive during June and found a mid-July through August brood, with a partial second emerging from mid-September to frost.

Status: Early summer migrant:** late summer and fall resident.

Distinguishing features: No other Iowa butterfly has a long beak-like snout. The upper wing surface is orange with brown on the margins and with subapical white patches and square tips on the forewing.

Distribution and habitat: Scattered throughout the state on margins of mesic forests.

Natural History: Larvae consume hackberry (Celtis occidentalis). It is often seen puddling in small groups. Because its presence in Iowa is based on migration, population sizes vary greatly from year to year. Nocturnal copulation has been reported (Heitzman, 1969).
