Wing span: 4.5-5.0 cm.

Flight time: Four major flight times exist for the three broods. Overwintering adults from last season's fall brood awaken in mid-April and fly through mid-May. These found a brood that flies from mid-June to mid-July. A second brood emerges during August. The third brood emerges in mid-September and flies through mid-October, after which they locate hibernacula.

Status: Breeding resident.

Distinguishing features: The Comma’s wings are orange-brown above with a dark brown with lighter crescents on the hindwing. The bottom surface is a collage of browns, rusts and tans. Wing color tends to be darker toward the body. Its comma-shaped mark is found in the middle of the lower hind wing, is silver, and barbed on one or both ends. Like other Iowa anglewing species, it has a darker summer form and a lighter spring form. Individual variability in spot patterns is also apparent in some populations more than others.

Distribution and habitat: The Comma is common throughout the state in woodlands. The hop merchant is generally more common in Iowa than the question mark.

Natural History: Larvae consume nettles, hops, and elms. Like other anglewings, they prefer fermented juice, sap, and dung piles as an adult food sources. As such, they are easily baited.
